Android Phone Made from Bamboo Weighs Half the Weight of iPhone

This Android based smartphone originated from the brains of a Middlesex University student Kieron-Scott Woodhouse, who manufactured a single phone frame out of organically grown bamboo. The bamboo is durable as well as sustainable and the entire device weighs abouthalf the weight of an iPhone!

This phone looks amazing with a shinny wood-like finish and also serves great function as its extremely light weight, actually significantly lighter than all current smart phones. Its also not made from metal or plastic like most other phones which makes it eco-friendly. I think bamboo would be a great resource for a housing for many electronic devices.

What was first a simple idea is turning into a dream for this college student Kieron-Scott Woodhouse (right-side of photo below) as he was contacted by an tech entrepreneur and the phone is now going into production under the name “ADzero”.

The ADzero android bamboo phone is expected to start manufacturing in China and will become available in the U.K. in various fashion or design related retailers and later in other parts of the world.

How To Clean Up Your Computer So It Runs Faster

Hey… You are reading this most likely because you are frustrated with your slow computer and want to learn how to clean up your computer so it runs faster without using any software and without spending any money. And your thinking to yourself, is this even possible? Yes. Its very possible, and as long as you keep reading you will learn how to clean up your computer so it runs faster within minutes!

Most people who encounter slow computer problems don’t realize just how easy it can be with the right knowledge to get your computer running smoothly again and all without spending a dime. And if your in any way doubting your technical ability or think you may be slight computer alliterate, don’t worry this guide is easy to follow!

Before you go running off to the geek squad or Best Buy to buy software, try spending some time to learn about what you can do to clean up your computer so it runs faster, way faster.

The following steps will get rid of all the junk and miscellaneous stuff hidden in your computer which may be significantly slowing down the daily computing operations down under the hood.

Step 1: System Configuration Utility
Launch the Start Menu and click on [Run…] or use the keyboard short-cut [Windows Key + R]. Type in ‘msconfig’ to launch the System Configuration Utility window and then click on the [Startup] tab at the top.

In this window is a list of all the programs and services that start as soon as your desktop screen begins to load. If you have tons of items checked on this list and you don’t know what half them are, chances are your computer isn’t booting up and running as fast as it could be, and you may just be wasting valuable CPU memory and speed.

What To Do
Deselect programs and services (as long as you know what it is) that you may not want starting up with your computer. Keep in mind that deselecting a program or service does not remove it from your computer, it simply stops it from launching when your computer is first starting up.

Result: By taking control over which services and/or programs are allowed to start up with your computer, you can significantly decrease the time it takes your computer to start up or restart. Usually you have to wait for a PC to finish loading all the services and programs before you can use your computer at its maximum speed, so if you can limit the number of services and programs required to start up with your computer your almost guaranteed a significant boost in speed.

Step 2: Free Up Disk Space
If your computer is running low on disk space you should take action to free up some space immediately. Many people just get stuck at this point because they are scared to delete files or programs they may need later in life, but even if you don’t want to remove programs or files you use you can still free up enough space to speed up your PC.

This free tool inside of every version of Windows, which is called Disk Cleanup, will delete only temporary and miscellaneous files that could free up many gigabytes of space on your computer such as temporary internet files, deleted files and miscellaneous unneeded temporary program files.

To access this tool, you can navigate to Accessories >System Tools >Disk Cleanup within the Start menu or you can search for Disk Cleanup in the Start menu (Windows Vista or later only).

As you can see in the image above, disk cleanup can free up a total of 2.95 GB on my computer which makes it a very useful tool to quickly squeeze out some extra gigabytes from files you probably don’t need/use.

Step 3: Run Disk Defragmenter
Hard disks store data onto different rings divided into different sectors each storing a respectable amount of data. The Disk Defragmenter moves all your data on the hard disk into sectors and rings that are closet to each other. When data is scattered throughout a hard disk in many different sectors, it takes the arm longer to reach the different sectors causing slow performance when trying to load data from the hard disk.

I recommend setting the Disk Defragmenter to run on a schedule of at least once a month or every other week. When setting up a schedule, choose a time when your sure your not going to be on your computer so the Disk Defragmenter can run without disrupting you.

5 Ways To Speed Up Your Internet Connection

If you’re dealing with a slow internet connection there’s only so much you can do. Most of yourinternet’s speed will involve the plan you have with your internet service provider, and how much bandwidth your allowed a month.

Here’s 5 effective ways I’ve gathered on how to speed up your internet connection:

Upgrade Your Browser (1)

If you’re using IE (Internet Explorer), I suggest keeping it and installing another, faster browser to go along with it such as Firefox, Chrome,Safari, or Opera. A lot of times IE may cause some problems such as slow loading times or errors while attempting to load scripts, so its a good idea having another browser handy. IE also tends to run a tad bit slower than Firefox, and Chrome.

No matter what browser you stick with, you should always make sure you have the latest version. If the browser asks you to update it, do it! Browser updates come with security and performance updates that will help guard your PC from malicious attacks and increase internetspeed.

Upgrade Your Internet Plan (2)

Try calling your internet service provider and ask them if you are receiving the maximum bandwidth and/or speed specifications allowed. Chances are you aren’t, and you can speed up your internet by simply asking them to give you the optimal speed.

Reset Your Home Network Router (3)

If you’re connecting to your home network via a router, simply unplugging it for a couple seconds and plugging it back in will reset the connection and may speed things up a bit. Sometimes the router gets too cluttered or heated, and simply needs a reset to clear things out and give it a breather.

When the internet is running slow at home the first thing I’ll do is reset the router. You can reset the cable modem as well for optimal results, but keep in mind the cable modem will take longer to reboot.

To reset a device, unplug the power cord for 30 seconds and plug it back in. Some devices also come with a reset button that you can hold down (usually with a push pin) which will reset the connection and ALL SETTINGS including the security password you may have set for your home network.

Secure Your Home Network (4)

You really have to be careful on the internet, especially if you browse a vast majority of sites and blogs, and tend to download anything that catches your eye.

Let’s not forget, “www” stands for the Word Wide Web, and just like there’s a lot of crazy stuff going on in the real world, there’s just as much crazy stuff going on the cyber world. People will try to steal your identity online, access your personal files, and there’s plenty of hackers who can take control of your computer from miles away.

It’s important to take note of sites and resources that you can trust, because any site you visit or program you download can contain malicious malware that will slow down your PC.

I remember my computer was once infected with a virus that installed a “fake” security app that let me know every 5 minutes or so that my computer was infected with a virus, and I needed to scan or install this software, which turned out to be an undercover virus itself. Who knew?

Only Download Software from A Trusted Resource (1)

I’m fine with with the torrent community, but, really? Can you expect an underground source of illegal, pirated content to always be 100% safe, and legit? I would hope so, but that’s just not the case. There’s always going to be that one hot head that will disguise a malicious virus as a torrent, and if you happen to download it your computers fate relies on the level of security you have protecting your computer. If you download torrents make sure you sort the downloads by “seeds” and browse through the comments for a particular torrent to get a good feel for the feedback before downloading a torrent file.

DOWNLOAD.COM is the safest resource to download programs and utilies from, and is a part of CNET, which scans each program to ensure it is 100% spyware free and is a very trusted resource for program reviews and downloads. If you need basic programs like a file converter, media player, editing software, security software, and just about anything else, is your safest resource and is all I use for my basic software needs. To be safe, before you download a program from an another source, I strongly recommend first searching on for your program to see if its available.

Use Google Page Rank to Check Authority (2)

A great way to measure the authority of a certain website or blog is to identify its Google page rank. This is a scale from 1-10 that Google uses to measure the authority of a website or blog, and lets you know how well you can trust its content.

This is not to say that a site or blog with a low page rank or page rank of zero should not be trusted or avoided, but simply the higher the page rank the more likely you can rely upon and trust the site or blog. How To Automatically Backup Your Hard Drive… For Real

Here’s how to automatically backup your hard drive, for real. None of this popping in a CD/DVD or flash drive to backup your files and storing them away in a closet, and if you’re doing that I suggest you quit now!

What you should really do is set up a secure external backup source and have all your files automatically backed up, so you don’t have to worry about losing your data or backing up your files.

And if you don’t know by now, I don’t like downloading software just to do things that I could do without software just as easily. Keep reading to learn how to automatically backup your hard drive right now without spending a dime.

You ready?

How To Automatically Backup Your Hard Drive

The easiest way to automatically backup your hard drive without using software is to take advantage of the Backup Utility. Backing up your files automatically is extremely easy in Windows 7. Just launch the backup utility by searching for “Backup” in the start menu or the control panel and click your way through the wizard.

If the backup utility in your version of Windows does not include the ability to schedule the backup sessions which is important, you can use the Scheduled Tasks Wizard to add the backup utility to run on a set schedule, however, the tool will require user input every time its launched.

You’ll need to identify an external backup source for the backup tool to automatically transfer your files on. Here’s your external backup source options:

An External Hard Drive
Another partition on your hard drive (click here to learn how to partition a hard drive).
I don’t recommend DVDs or CDs because the space is very limited and does not provide a reliable backup medium.
The “Cloud” – You can backup your hard drive to a secured location on the internet through various services. For this, I would recommend additional software like Norton 360 that can automatically backup your hard drive to a secured location in the “cloud”. Norton has one of the most advanced online backup utilities that I highly recommend and will store all your files on the internet that you can secure with a username and password.
The best external backup sources in my opinion would be an external hard drive and the “Cloud.” Both are extremely reliable backup locations and can handle large amounts of data. My personal favorite backup location is a separate partition right on the hard drive that is already in your computer. This way you can easily format

By splitting your hard drive into multiple partitions, you are essentially creating completely separate storage locations in one hard drive. If anything happens to your computer you can easily erase the data on the system partition which was only used to install Windows, and then reinstall Windows on the same partition while all your files are safe on another partition on the hard drive.

How To Build A Network With A NAS


Since a NAS device is capable of being the center of an entire small business network and not just additional or backup storage, I thought it would make sense to tell you how to build a network with a NAS device as the central server, possibly even eliminating a Windows Server or Small Business Server.

Here is a diagram that illustrates how a NAS device, in this case a Netgear ReadyNAS Pro, can be the central focus of fairly large and complex business network:

Many workgroups and small businesses no longer need the cost, complexity or hassle of a full blown Windows Server (or Novell Server in days gone by), all they need is some central authority to handle network addressing, be a centralized file storage location with NAS RAID data protection and perhaps share a printer.

If you do need to “join” a Microsoft Active Directory network, make sure that the NAS you buy is a business class product and not a consumer or prosumer class unit. In the Netgear ReadyNAS lineup, products like the NVX, Pro and any rackmount NAS will join an AD domain. Products like the Duo, NV+, any with “Pioneer” in the name, Ultra and Ultra Plus cannot become part of an Active Directory schema.

Keep in mind that you do not need the NAS to join the domain just to be accessed on that type of network, just to use AD user & security information to control access to NAS shared resources.

Let’s take a look at the steps of setting up a small business network using a network attached storage server as the ‘hub’ of the network in stages. For our purposes here, we will operate under the assumption that this is our entire network and we are not part of a larger organization.

Getting To Know Your New NAS Server

I cannot cover every NAS server you may end up buying, but I can tell you what things you want to know about it.

To start, you need to be able to access the network storage device’s administration software, possibly a built-in web server administration interface. The difficulty is, how does the manufacturer set the default TCP/IP address on the NAS so that you can access it after plugging it in to your network?

Some vendors always use the same default address, but other vendors change from time to time. If your device has a front LED or similar display that shows the IP address of the device then your job is a bit easier.

The Netgear ReadyNAS product lineup is one of my favorites. One nice feature is that all across their product line from the cheapest Home NAS to the most expensive Enterprise NAS they all use a practically identical user interface that you access through your web browser.

With ReadyNAS “RAIDiator” web interface software, you have the choice of using wizards to help you configure your NAS or going into advanced mode if you understand the basics of the settings you might need to change.

Yet, before you can access the web browser you have to be on the same “network”, without an addressing conflict. Netgear provides a software they call “RAIDar” that you install on one PC to “find” the ReadyNAS server even if it’s IP address is not compatible with your IP schema. It then lets you set it to something that is appropriate.

Once you can access the NAS device and have its IP address configured to a compatible and appropriate address for your network – remember, no two devices can be set to the same address – you are ready for the next step, determining who will control network addressing.

Determining Who Will Control Network Addressing

Modern networks pass “packets” of data using the TCP/IP protocol (v4, v6 is just starting to show itself), which some device has to determine. In rare occasions, a network administrator will manually assign an address to every device on the network in the form, 4 octets ranging from 0.255 each – with limitations.

You have probably seen this as, for instance. A subnet mask, usually, will control what other addresses can be “seen”. In this case, only those addresses that share the first three octets or 192.168.1.x (with ‘x’ being a number between 1 and 254).

More common is for one device, either a router (typically an internet modem/router) or a server to allocate addresses using DHCP using a range of addresses that an administrator (or vendor default) determines.

Internet modem/router control

If you just have a few computers connected to an internet modem/router then you probably have a network base address determined by the modem/router vendor default with a range of addresses to be handed out by the router using the DHCP protocol.

Along with the actual device address and subnet mask, the router gives out its own address to be used as the ‘gateway’ to all other networks including the internet.

In addition, though, your computer needs a way to convert website URL’s like into TCP/IP addresses in the format. Enter DNS or Domain Name Service.

Usually your internet service provider (ISP) will provide you with the DNS service, but you can use OpenDNS servers for additional features and protections. Your modem/router will usually pick up the DNS server addresses from your ISP automatically and in turn hand them out to each workstations as part of the DHCP addressing process.

Server control

Once you add a NAS device as the central file storage repository you have a second option, and that is for the NAS to hand out network addresses to each workstation. Naturally, to do this you would have to assign your NAS a ‘static’ IP address for itself. Because of the predominance of 192.168.1.x networks, I usually choose something else (but make sure it is in the “Private” address ranges of the internet) like 10.1.0.x, but that depends on any other networks that may be part of a larger scenario.

In this scenario, you would use the web admin interface of your NAS to turn DHCP on and set the proper values in each of the fields: base address, address range, subnet mask, gateway and DNS servers.

Why would you choose Server control?

The reason I often choose to have the NAS device control network addressing is this, what if your internet modem/router dies or the ISP comes along and issues you a new one for whatever reason?

Keep in mind that the router is probably the MOST likely piece of equipment to get lightning damage (because of the phone line or cable connection extending outside) and it is nice to keep the basic network, file sharing and printing up and running while that is replaced. Further, the modem/router may not be your property and I like to own the devices that have control of my network.

Example – Router as DHCP Server

Let’s say you are just going to add a NAS device as a server on your network and let your internet router continue to take care of the addressing. Well, again, I like static IP’s for my servers and other devices other than workstations, so you need to know what address your network currently is using.

The easiest way to find out is to let your PC tell you. Here is a video that shows you how:

What you can see is that the DHCP server is the same as the Gateway which tells us that your internet modem/router is currently controlling network addressing. To make any changes, or to see what the “client” address range is (required to know so you can set a ‘static’ address for the NAS device), you will need to know how to login to your router.

All routers are different, but they have similar settings and hopefully an intuitive web interface. For specific instructions, see your routers manual or contact your ISP. In the case that you have installed a WiFi or other router inside of your ISP’s modem then consult those instructions.

Chances are that in the above example you would find that the “client” address range of the DHCP server is something resembling –

If that were the case and I wanted to select a static address for my NAS I might choose Further, if I had other devices like a network printer, I would probably address them in the range.

Important note: Any time you assign a static IP address to a device, do yourself and any future administrator a huge favor and attach a label to the outside of the device in a prominent location!

Example – NAS as DHCP Server

Again, using the above example that your router is, you would have to login to your router, usually by opening a web browser and typing into the address bar and logging in.

You would then find the DHCP server control and write down all values, especially making sure you have the DNS settings which can also be found from the workstation as shown in the video.

Then turn off DHCP on your router and save changes. If you do decide to change from the 192.168.x.x format to something else, be sure you understand what you are doing and why or else don’t do it.

Next you would login to your NAS device in the same way, only using the NAS device IP address in the address bar of your browser. If you change the address of the NAS then obviously you will be disconnected and have to reconnect using the new address.

Turn on DHCP services in the NAS and enter the configuration information. For client address range, I normally don’t have this much larger than it needs to be. For instance, if you have 5 PC’s (and maybe even a printer or two – though not if it were mine) that is less than 10 devices total. So I might set a address range of maybe 101 – 110 or 115, but not as large as the vendor default.

Especially if you have a WiFi access point somewhere on the network there is no sense risking too many rogue devices getting the chance to attach.

Everything else stays the same as it was on the router in the DHCP settings page. Save your work and exit.

If you reboot a workstation PC and check for IP address information again you should see the new values displayed for DHCP server.

Addressing Wrap Up

Whew! That seems pretty complicated with all of those paragraphs of type, but it really boils down to a pretty straigthforward process. I just wanted to spell out as much as I could for the benefit of someone who may not be as well versed in network setup.

Bottom line is that you have a choice, just don’t go beyond your abilities and understanding and end up disconnecting all the PC’s from each other, the new NAS server and the internet! When in doubt, ask, there are all kinds of networking videos and other helps available for free online.

Controlling Access To Network Resources

For your own benefit, you will want to organize the files on your network storage device according to a couple of factors:

  • Do you need to restrict access differently for various data files?
  • Are there some files that need to be backed up and others that do not (like workstation backups)?
  • Is there a category of files stored that will be accessed by special services like media players?

You want to address these issues early on so that you can create share points on your NAS appropriately to make access control and sharing simple, logical, and straightforward.

Even if you want all users to easily be able to access all data, printers, etc – or “shares” on the server, you still want to segregate data files for other purposes of convenience.

What Is A Share?

All servers, NAS devices included, will talk about “network shares”. A share is simply a term to describe something you can access on your network server. A printer that is attached to your NAS and then shared as, say, “Printer1” is a share.

Each share can be controlled for security purposes, but can be “open” for anonymous users with no password if you desire. This probably is not the best idea, but I see it all the time.

Typically in a small business network there will be group of files that pretty much everyone needs to be able to access. Traditionally, this group of files is placed on a share point that is then “mapped” automatically to each workstation as a drive letter – such as drive “F:” (Historically, A: and B: were floppy drives, C: the hard disk, D: the CDRom drive and optionally a Zip drive or second CDRom was E: – hence “F:” was almost always the next universally available drive letter.)

On a NAS device there are typically one or more shares created by default, maybe “backup” and “media”. You can use these or not at your discretion. If you do have media files, you may just choose to use the media share provided which often is already further divided into categories of media such as “music”, “pictures”, “videos”.

“backup” may be reserved for backing up workstations, which, in my opinion should not contain company data, but will include preferences and configuration files and just in general be a pain to recreate. Many NAS servers will come with software for backing up workstation to the NAS and using the “backup” share for that make sense. We will talk more aboutbackup later.

If you do have some data that needs to be secured differently, perhaps for management or accounting, then you may consider creating a separate user group for those users, a separate file “share” for those data files, and even map that share to a different drive letter, perhaps “G:”. Then you assign access rights for that “share” to members of the user group you created.

Resource Control Summary

To summarize, we control resources not just for security, but also for accessibility and efficiency. Here is what you need to do:

  1. Determine what resources your NAS server will offer to users, including “system” users like backup software and media players, and what restrictions you need to put on these resources. Remember, too, that some users should only be given “read” access to some company files just so they do not accidentally change, delete or move them. Create the shares.
  2. Create a user on the NAS server for each user accessing the NAS device.
  3. Create user groups using logic based on need to grant access, map drives, print, etc.
  4. Set the access control on each share resource preferably to user groups, not users. The exception would be if you choose to have a “home” directory on the server for each user.
  5. Test and DOCUMENT what you did.

That’s about it. Do not make it any harder than it has to be, but do be sure to protect your business by protecting your data.

Setting Up Shared Resources

Setting up new shares on a NAS server can be as easy or as complicated as you like. I prefer easy.

What you determined in the step about controlling shares (above) helps you determine what to do here. The easiest and most basic share is created simply by setting the name and including a helpful description. Public access without any user authentication makes it easy, although not secure.

Although Linux, the underlying operating system of most NAS servers is case sensitive, you will probably find that you CANNOT create a share named “Test” and another named “test”. That is probably a good thing.

The other thing you might find odd is that, unlike a Windows server, you cannot usually create a share inside the directory structure of another share.

Unfamiliar Terminology

If you come from the Windows world, you may find the security terminology unfamiliar. If you want to access a share from a Windows client, you may see a category called “CIFS” for setting those access permissions. “AFP” is what you would use for Mac clients.

It would be hard to give too much more information on this topic without being specific to one NAS family. Suffice it to say, though, if you do not understand the options you see, seek help before messing around with something you do not know the consequences of. Again, often, the simpler the better.

Recycle Bin

One option that you want to consider setting on CIFS shares is the recycle bin option, if provided (Netgear ReadyNAS does). This can be real handy and even an improvement over Windows servers. You get to specify how many days deleted files are kept in the recycle bin on the root of the share


Again, some NAS servers under CIFS will allow you to hide the share from “browsing”. This means that if a user knows or guesses of its existence they can access it unless you have restricted access, but they will not find it by browsing the server.

USB Printers and Drives

Most NAS devices have a USB port that you can plug in a USB printer to share or a USB external hard drive and create shares for access to that also. Keep in mind, though, before you decide to expand the capacity of your NAS with an USB hard drive that any data kept there will NOT be NAS RAID protected.

I see external USB hard drives on NAS servers as appropriate for read-only data that is backed up somewhere else and for backing up the NAS itself to.


Backup. It’s that thing that most people do not do, at least not regularly.

If you have properly configured your NAS server to include RAID1 or above protection, congratulations!, many do not. But do not make the mistake of thinking that NAS RAID is a backup! – it is not.

NAS RAID protects you from failing hard drives; if you delete or corrupt a file on one hard drive of a mirrored RAID1 set, for instance, it is immediately deleted or corrupted on the other drive as well.

Backing up the data on your NAS allows you to:

  • Recover a file accidentally deleted (as will the recycle bin, but only if configured!)
  • Restore a file before a data entry mistake
  • Restore a file from before a program crash or error corrupted
  • Restore your data to a point in time before virus/malware corruption
  • Restore data to a previous point in time for analysis, reports, etc. (provided you cycle backups at predetermined periods)
  • Restore your data to a new NAS server if your NAS is detroyed in fire or disaster or stolen.

Backups are only good, though, if they can be accessed. Backups kept on site will likely do you no good in the case of fire, flood or many natural disasters. Therefore to give you protection against all ranges of threats to your data you must employ multiple backup methods.

Ways to Backup Your NAS Server

There are many ways to backup the data on your NAS server, such as:

  • Backup to an attached external USB hard drive, scheduled through the NAS interface or by way of a “backup button” on the NAS
  • Backup to a remote NAS that you own at another location
  • Backup to a workstation with an external or other large hard drive
  • Backup to Tape Drive or other backup device installed on another server or workstation (getting rare these days)
  • Backup to an online backup service, such as the Netgear ReadyNAS vault service (built-in to the NAS itself) or using a workstation based network enabled online backup service such as Mozy Pro.

Online backup services make a great deal of sense because of the geographic separation (in most cases) between your office and the location of the backup servers. Depending on the service, you may even have archival backups that allow you to choose a point in the past to restore from – this is critical if you have a need for a file that was corrupted or deleted for some time before you realized it.

The one inconvenience to online backup is that it may take a day or so to retrieve your data in the case of catastropic loss where you need EVERYTHING. Either downloading or having them send you the data overnight via the media of your choice does have a time factor involved, whereas a local USB hard drive just takes how ever long it takes to copy back to the NAS.

While not needed often by most businesses, I have had clients who, over the years, have asked me to restore a file or set of data files from over 30 days prior.

Certainly an easy and inexpensive way to have a backup of your data is simply to buy a cheap, large external USB hard drive and backup to that. Buy multiple drives and you can have a rotation.

Document Your Network

Once you go to all the work to setup, configure and tweak your new NAS based network, do yourself a favor and document what you did.

The best way to do this is to keep a notepad handy as you work and write down what you do.

Start by recording the login instructions for the NAS along with the username and password. If you have no reason to not trust anyone who can physically put their hands on your NAS you might consider putting a label on the front, or underneath if you want to be discreet. This has saved MANY people in the past; just consider it.

Especially if you have several shares and user groups with complex access restrictions, documenting your network will serve you well should you ever have to recreate it. In addition to documenting what you do, maybe make a note or two about WHY you did what you did also; it may not be obvious a year or more down the road.

When Do I Need A Server For My Office?

I come upon a number of small businesses and professionals who are asking at what point do I need a server for my office? Peer to peer networks among Windows PC’s are easy to setup and they do work.

Some circumstances just scream for a dedicated file server.

Here are some signs that you need a server for your office:

  • You are not sure where to locate a document and you waste time searching on all of your workstations.
  • You realize you have more than 1 copy of a document and now you have to figure out which is the most recent, or, heaven forbid, more than 1 is being updated on a regular basis.
  • You have no idea how to effectively backup all of your important data because you don’t really know where it all resides.
  • You want to print to a shared printer but the PC that normally is attached to it is currently down.

All of these issues are indicative of a need to centralize your data on a dedicated file server.

In the past, this has meant a serious cash outlay for a piece of hardware, $700 or more for Windows Server software and probably $1000 or so for an IT firm to set you up and then charge you ongoing maintenance fees.

These small devices are usually about the size of a toaster (or pizza box if you have a computer “rack” you want to install it into) and run a free operating system based on the solid Linux operating system.

NAS devices are ideal for small offices who need a server for dedicated file sharing, print sharing, media storage and streaming or providing “brains” for the office network.

When you make the move to add a network storage device to your office network you can create “shares” that are available to the entire organization and also have shares that are private to individual users. Quotas can even be easily setup to make sure no one user “hogs” all of the space.

Most of these network storage devices also have the ability to connect and share a USB printer that can be made available to whomever in the office needs it, without worrying about a PC being turned on and running Windows to make it work.

Any NAS that I would recommend for an office has hard drive redundancy, commonly referred to as a level of “RAID”, that protects your data in case of a single hard drive failure – something not common on individual workstation PC’s. The unit then warns you that a drive has gone bad so you can replace it before any data is lost.

All without any downtime to your business. These units have a “hot swap” feature that means you can replace a failed drive without even turning off and rebooting the unit.

So when do you need a server for your office or business? Easy, when you are tired of battling your data the hard way and then losing sleep at night over the fear of losing the data your business needs to survive and thrive.

External Hard Drive Crashed

Just today I fielded a question on my computer help forum from a person who had data (operative word “HAD”) on an external hard drive. The drive no longer works and the company wants him to send it in for replacement.

His question was “how do I recover the data on my external hard drive?” Good question. If the drive is good but the enclosure bad (perhaps a bad power supply) you can get a Vantec USB adapter and recover the data – possibly voiding the external hard drive warranty when you take out the hard drive.

The answer is redundant hard drives.

I have profiled some very nice network storage devices for home use where you can have a RAID1 (mirrored hard drives) NAS where your data is safe when one hard drive fails. How To Prevent Data Loss

I have a friend in another part of the country we visited a little while ago who was telling us about when their Apple laptop hard drive crashed. At the time, the laptop was full of both business data and quite a bit of iTunes music.

All that data and iTunes music was lost. Now I don’t want to harp on people about backup too much, because it is easy to forget to do or think it was not that long ago.

But imagine a small, toaster size device that you could have in your home or office that was capable of holding ALL of your important data, ALL of your iTunes or Amazon music library that you probably have paid thousands of dollars for AND hold tons of video as well?

Now imagine being able to access that device from anywhere on your home wireless or wired network, and could even play music or movies stored on that device with iTunes player or your PlayStation.

Not done yet. Imagine being able to access that device from any workstation, laptop or iPad; does not matter if it’s running Windows, Apple or Linux.

Further, you could automatically backup your PC’s to that device.

THEN, you could even backup that device to an online backup service – automatically!

Sound too good to be true? Well it’s NOT!

Network storage devices are now mainstream. They take up very little space, are “green” so they do not use a lot of power – will go to “sleep” when not in use – and are extremely versatile.

Do I Really Need RAID NAS?

When searching for Network Storage solutions, often people look at price and wonder why they should spend more money for NAS RAID instead of just a single hard drive in the NAS device.

The NAS device may or may not be backed up, I would suggest it most likely is not. If the network storage device itself is for backup, maybe you do not need RAID1, RAID5, or RAID6 (or X-RAID or X-RAID2 in a ReadyNAS unit) to protect your data.

If the NAS is just for backup, and not archival backup, losing the only drive or one of the RAID0 drives then there may be no real loss. Of course, if the source data drive would happen to die coincidentally with the backup drive, who’s going to be full of regret or maybe lose their job?

Personally, I wish RAID0 (striping) would not even be considered RAID. RAID isREDUNDANT Array of Independent Disks. There is NOTHING REDUNDANT about RAID0. RAID0 is strictly for speed.

If you want speed and redundancy, that would be RAID 0 + 1 or RAID10.

Simply put, if the data is worth storing, it is worth storing in such a way that you can sustain a hard drive failure without losing data. Even if you have a backup of that data, even if that backup is current, do you really want the hassle of restoring & rebuilding?

RAID1, or mirroring, uses 2 hard drives. If one fails, the other keeps on going and your NAS device stays online. Hopefully you have the network storage device configured to email you when one of the redundant hard drives fails so you can get it promptly replaced.

RAID1 is the best you can do in the case of a 2 drive NAS device.

The next step up, and probably the most common RAID is RAID5. RAID5 uses 3 or more hard drives to make your data redundant. Lose any 1 hard drive and you have no problem; lose 2, though, and you will likely sustain data loss.

For this reason, some NAS devices, like Netgear ReadyNAS, allow you to configure a “hot spare” that will automatically replace a failed hard drive. Remember, though, that for as long as it might take to “resync” the new drive, you are potentially at risk if a second drive fails.

RAID6 came in to fill this gap. With RAID6, you can actually sustain the loss of two hard drives without losing data. There is no “resync” period where you are at risk when one hard drive fails. You pay for this, though, in having to buy an extra drive up front then same as you do with a hot spare.

For most of the network storage devices we compare and review here, there are so few drives available in the device that we kind of hate to dedicate two drives to redundancy. The enterprise NAS devices with twelve hard drives would certainly be an exception.

To answer the question, “do I really need RAID NAS”, the answer is YES. Without RAID, figure that the only hard drive you have will fail, will fail at the most inopportune time, and that you will lose data when that happens.
